I’ve long been a fan of the music of Aires, with his mix of field recordings, ambient, and drones having a calming, meditative quality to them. Those feelings are present on latest recording Naturalismo, which carries a restorative, positive feeling to its minimalist sounds. This is music for not so much unwinding at the end of the day, but of letting yourself unfurl, of releasing every bit of tension within body and mind, and emerging from the process feeling refreshed.
Gentle and soft for the most part, Naturalismo also includes section of volume that, if handled poorly, would have broken the spell the record seeks to cast. As it is though, such moments act instead to provide sections of raw emotional catharsis, whilst ensuring that, sonically, the album doesn’t drift along without tension or texture. Whilst such moments may bear similarities to techniques used by harsh noise or industrial artists, the effect is very different – rather than being off-putting and confrontational, the result here is welcoming and warm, even at its loudest and most raw. It’s that feeling of warmth which defines Naturalismo, and gives it the character that makes it a success.
Naturalismo can be streamed and downloaded via Bandcamp.
