It seems like an age ago that Doomriders released Grand Blood – and it is. It’s been over four years since we last had a new album from the riff-heavy hardcore band, and I’m sure I’m not alone in hoping that the wait won’t go on much longer. Though in the meantime, Grand Blood (along with previous albums Black Thunder and Darkness Come Alive) have more than enough quality to keep me satisfied.
Of the three albums from Doomriders, Grand Blood is the only one that didn’t instantly connect with me (as noted in my very first review published on this site); but over time, it won me over. Compared with previous efforts, it’s a fairly experimental release, taking the Doomriders sound in to new territories. For me though, the band are at their best when making music that makes you want to move, and there’s plenty of that here. Still, I can’t help but wonder if this might be the last we hear from the band. If so, it’s as fine a way as any for them to bow out.
