I don’t get to go to nearly as many shows as I’d like these days. A mixture of ill-health, adult responsibilities, and geographic location mean that it’s rare I get to go to shows, and it’s a real shame. One of the worst things about not getting to go to many gigs is that I often feel like I’m missing out on awesome local bands. Nottingham has a lot of superb bands and excellent venues, both big and small, and were I able to go to more shows, I get the feeling I’d have heard about Beast As God before now, as their kind of dark, 90s-inspired hardcore is very impressive.

Right from the start, it’s clear that this band aren’t messing around, with the build-up intro of “Eschatological Vision” giving way to some very intense, dirty hardcore, played with real conviction that fans of bands like His Hero Is Gone, Catharsis, Unruh, and so on will surely appreciate. The band succeed at tapping in to that vein of darkness that seems so rare in hardcore these days, but seemed to characterise most of what made the genre great in the 90s. There’s also hints of Japanese bands such as GISM in there, chiefly in the way that these songs sometimes sound like they’re hanging together by a thread (not to mention that there was a very limited run of the tape produced with a GISM rip-off cover). Just in case it isn’t obvious, this is a very good thing. Not enough bands capture that chaotic, dangerous feeling, and combined with more tightly controlled sections, as demonstrated on final track “Eulogie”, it makes for a very powerful listen. The four tracks on this tape have just the right amount of variation whilst still sticking within their chosen style, and are highly recommended.

The release can be streamed and downloaded via Bandcamp, and the cassette itself can be purchased via Viral Age Records.
